Everything that governs the SBA Internal League — game format, eligibility, conduct on and off the court. Modifications follow FIBA Official Basketball Rules with adjustments for youth development.

Foundations

The SBA 5×5 Internal League is overseen and managed by SBA coaches. Unless stated otherwise on this page, all play follows the FIBA Official Basketball Rules. Modifications below exist for the development of youth sport.

League structure

Age groups

  • U10 — born 2016 or after
  • U12 — born 2014 or after

Schedule & venue

Games are played on Thursdays and Fridays, 6:00–8:00 PM at ACS Barker Level 3 Court. All scheduled games are final and may not be moved.

Season regulations

League format

  • Minimum 4 teams per division.
  • Round-robin within division — every team plays every other team.
  • Semi-Finals and Finals follow the regular season.

Tiebreakers (in order)

  1. Head-to-head record
  2. Season point differential
  3. Point differential in games between tied teams

Roster & eligibility

  • Once a player has played a game for a team, they may not transfer to another team for the rest of the season.
  • Minimum 5 players to begin a game; maximum 10 on the roster.
  • If available players fall below 4 during a game, play stops and the win is awarded to the opposing team.

Substitutions

  • Q1 & Q2 — no substitutions; the five players on court in Q1 must differ from Q2.
  • 9-player exception — if a team has only 9 players, one may play in both Q1 and Q2.
  • Q3 & Q4 — substitutions allowed.
  • Injury — a player injured in the first half may return in the second.

Playoff eligibility

Game format

  • 1 hour per game
  • 4 × 8-min quarters
  • 1-min rest between quarters
  • Overtime: 2 min
  • No shot clock

Clock

The clock runs continuously, except for the final 2 minutes of the 4th quarter.

Equipment & uniforms

Ball size

  • U10 — Size 5
  • U12 — Size 6

Leather or synthetic leather only — no rubber balls.

Team uniforms

  • All players in the same colour uniform.
  • Numbers 00–99, clearly displayed front and back.
  • Shorts without pockets.

Rule modifications

Shortened free throws

Free throws taken from approximately 14 feet from the backboard.

Zone defence

Zone defence is not allowed. Man-to-man only. Trapping defence is not permitted.

Half-court defence

  • All teams must retreat behind the halfway line on any inbound.
  • Defenders may not cross the half-court line until the ball has crossed it.
  • Full-court defence is permitted during live play.
  • During the final 2 minutes (stop-clock), both teams may play full-court man-to-man only.

Conduct, penalties & liability

The league reserves the right to enforce penalties based on infraction severity.

Example escalation

  • First offence: warning.
  • Second offence: penalty — may include loss of game points or suspension.
